“We weren\u2019t the churchgoing type\u2026 but when Pastor Sank arrived, everyone was sayin’ how great he was, how inspiring\u2026<\/p>\n

So we started attending\u00a0most\u00a0Sundays,\u00a0the whole family.<\/p>\n

The first time I\u00a0heard Pastor Sank I\u00a0thought he was too\u2026 aggressive, you know, screaming from high up on the pulpit, his face all red, sayin’ that the whole world was going to hell, that our society was rotten… He was big on the idea that all the immigrants were invadin’ our way of life.<\/p>\n

Angry or not, his words rang true to us\u2026 probably because we had heard the same ideas in the news\u2026 and we were afraid.<\/p>\n

Then, one\u00a0Sunday, Pastor Sank announced he had had a vision and the Lord had told him that the world would end two months from then, on October the fourth.<\/p>\n

We didn\u2019t believe him right away. Plenty of people been scammed by this sort of thing, you know\u2026 but Pastor Sank wasn\u2019t asking for money or anything\u2026 all he wanted was for us to follow him around the country, talking to people about his prophecy, warning them, gettin’ them to repent\u2026<\/p>\n

Everyone in the parish was on board\u2026\u00a0 and so were we.<\/p>\n

I quitted my job and we sold everything. Used some of that money to fix our old RV so we could join the\u2026. Final Crusade, that\u2019s how Pastor Sank called it.<\/p>\n

We drove north along the coast, stopping in every town, talkin’ to folks about the end of the world, trying to save them from the depths of hell\u2026.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t an easy road. Some looked at us as if we was crazy\u2026 others looked on us with pity. But rest assured, if we ever needed anything, directions, or a bathroom for the kids, we could always depend on some stranger\u2019s kindness. Yeah, we got to meet a lot of folks that way. A lot of ’em very different from us\u2026 some of ’em even immigrants.<\/p>\n

Anyway, October the fourth came\u2026 and went\u2026 and nothing happened. Pastor Sank said it was a miscalculation; that the rapture would happen\u00a0in two weeks\u00a0instead\u2026<\/p>\n

Enough was enough.<\/p>\n

We went back home\u2026 broke and jobless.<\/p>\n

It took some time for us to bounce back from that slump.<\/p>\n

But despite all that, I have no regrets\u2026 Thanks to Pastor Sank, we had a chance to see beyond our little town, to discover other people and understand how they think\u2026<\/p>\n

You could say we stopped being scared of the world after that trip.<\/p>\n

We also stopped going to church.”<\/p>\n
