It\u2019s so silly when you think about it\u2026<\/p>\n

I was eighteen\u2026 a friend asked me to go with him on a double date\u2026<\/p>\n

The other girl – who wasn\u2019t that attractive I must say \u2013 claimed to be a psychic and insisted on reading my palm\u2026. For shit and giggles I guess\u2026<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t believe in those things, but I wasn\u2019t opposed either, or at least I wasn\u2019t back then.<\/p>\n

And so she began looking at my palm and telling me all these things about my life, my health, my studies; obvious stuff\u2026<\/p>\n

At some moment she turned silent\u2026<\/p>\n

I asked her what was going on, but she refused to tell me.<\/p>\n

Of course, I insisted\u2026<\/p>\n

She then pointed at this line in my palm and said that, one day, I\u2019d meet the love of my life, my true love\u2026 but that she would die soon afterwards.<\/p>\n

Again, I\u2019m not superstitious, but that prediction obsessed me for a long time<\/p>\n

For starters, it made me afraid of falling in love\u2026 or more afraid I should say.<\/p>\n

And then, on the other hand, those girls I took more seriously\u2026 well, those I got disillusioned with after a while\u2026 when I saw they weren\u2019t dying.<\/p>\n

Then I got over it and, a few years later, I met a girl.<\/p>\n

We married.<\/p>\n

I was happy, or at least I thought I was.<\/p>\n

From time to time, I would remember that silly prediction and laugh at it\u2026. And at myself for half believing it.<\/p>\n

Then it happened\u2026<\/p>\n

My oldest son had just turned eight\u2026 he got invited to a birthday party. \u00a0My wife couldn\u2019t take him, so I did\u2026<\/p>\n

That\u2019s where I saw her for the first time.<\/p>\n

Of course I thought she was pretty, beautiful in fact; but you know, I was married\u2026<\/p>\n

I swear I don\u2019t remember how we started talking but, before we left that party, I knew I was in love with her, more than I had ever been with anyone else, including my wife.<\/p>\n

She gave me her number. I called her and we met\u2026 in secret\u2026 she was married too.<\/p>\n

We discussed a possible relationship; she said she\u2019d think about it\u2026<\/p>\n

We kissed but never made love.<\/p>\n

The next day she died\u2026 car crash.<\/p>\n

Did I kill her by loving her?<\/p>\n

Or did I decide I loved her just because she died?<\/p>\n

My worst fear is that it was all mere chance.”<\/p>\n
